What Is BURN2, and What Type of Event Is Octoburn?

BURN2 describes itself as the virtual extension of Burning Man, spreading Burning Culture and the Ten Principles year-round in Second Life. It was formally established as a regional in 2010 and calls itself the first sanctioned Burning Man regional in the virtual world.

Octoburn is BURN2’s main annual event. It is a week-long, avatar-based gathering on a virtual playa where participants build camps and art, dance at sound camps, drive art cars and attend the Man and Temple burns.

Octoburn follows the same art theme as Burning Man’s Black Rock City. For 2026, that theme is Axis Mundi, which Burning Man describes as celebrating the interconnectedness of our global community, new social realities, and our enduring ties to the natural world.

It is interactive, not a video stream. You attend as an avatar, move around the playa, chat, dance and explore.

What Is Scheduled on October 20?

BURN2’s official DJ Performer listing shows NODE Frequency on October 20, 2026, 8–11 p.m. The listing as retrieved does not state a time zone.

Stylized digital avatars gather around an orange virtual music platform with sculptural sound waves.

BURN2 community meetings and the SKIN BURN are published in SLT (Second Life Time, which follows U.S. Pacific time), but do not assume the NODE Frequency hours use SLT until the organizer confirms it.

If the listing is in Pacific time (PDT, UTC−7 on October 20): 8–11 p.m. equals 03:00–06:00 UTC on October 21. Add your own UTC offset to find your local time.

Before you go, check: the time zone, the current in-world destination, any organizer changes, and any arrival notes on the official event calendar.

This is a spotlight on one listing, not a full daily timetable. Camps and stages run their own schedules.

What Ends, What Continues, What Comes Next

What has ended

  • Black Rock City 2026, the in-person Burning Man in Nevada (Theme: Axis Mundi, 40th anniversary year), has closed for the year. Burning Man’s official page lists the 2026 event as August 30–September 7.
  • Octoburn opening weekend, October 16–18, is complete.

What continues this week

  • Octoburn 2026 runs through October 25 with participant-built camps, art, sound camps and shared landmarks such as the Man, Temple and Center Camp.
  • Man Burn, October 24 and Temple Burn, October 25 are the closing ceremonies. Keep them as separate reminders.

What comes next

  • Afterglow week, October 26–November 1: BURN2 invites visitors to explore camps, collect gifts and interact with camp elements. Builders leave work in place for this week, then complete Leave No Trace cleanup by November 1 at 11 p.m. SLT.
  • SKIN BURN, Saturday November 7: a reprise burn of the Man at noon and 6 p.m. SLT/Pacific, with everyone attending in a low-complexity avatar. Conversion: noon Pacific Standard Time is 20:00 UTC; 6 p.m. is 02:00 UTC on November 8.
  • Burning Man 2027: the announced art theme is Spellbound, shown on BURN2’s homepage under news from Burning Man Project.

How Do You Get to BURN2? (Preferred Ways to “Reach the Burn”)

BURN2 has no travel cost, visa or camping gear. Getting there means getting online.

  1. Create a free account at secondlife.com and pick a starter avatar.
  2. Install a viewer. BURN2 links the official Second Life Viewer and recommends many experienced users choose the third-party Firestorm viewer.
  3. Complete the orientation area you land in on first login.
  4. Teleport to the playa. Paste BURN2’s address (SLURL) into the viewer’s address bar, or search the map for “Burning Man.” The home region is Deep Hole.
  5. Ask for help. BURN2 says staff can be reached by in-world instant message, and the Come to BURN2 page has a form where you can give your time zone so someone can meet you.

If you prefer to reach a physical Burn, Burning Man Project lists over 80 official Regional Events a year, attended by more than 100,000 people, with communities in over 75 countries.

Who Is This For? Audience Notes for Planning

BURN2 has not published its own demographic survey, so the closest official benchmark is the Black Rock City Census. Treat the figures below as a proxy for the wider Burner community, not as BURN2 data.

  • Age: the 2023 BRC Census reports a median age of 36, with ages 30–39 the largest group (45% of the sample).
  • Geography: in 2022, participants came from 91 countries, with the U.S. at 83.8%, then Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany and Mexico.
  • BURN2’s own community: BURN2 says it mixes people who attend the real Burning Man with people around the world who may never visit the physical playa, and that for many, BURN2 is their Burning Man experience.
  • Likely reader needs: time-zone conversion, first-time Second Life setup, a clear start time, and reassurance that it is free.

What About Burners Without Borders?

Burners Without Borders (BWB) is Burning Man Project’s global civic and disaster-response network. It formed in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina relief work and marked 20 years in 2025.

It is separate from BURN2’s calendar, but it matters to the same audience: BWB supports local projects, disaster response and environmental work, and BURN2’s homepage links to BWB news. For Burners outside the U.S., it is a way to take part year-round beyond attending an event.

How this was checked: BURN2’s homepage and Come to BURN2 page were reviewed October 19, 2026. The NODE Frequency listing, the October 24/25 burn dates and the Afterglow cleanup deadline come from earlier retrieval of BURN2’s category listing and builder guidelines and were not re-opened in this pass.
